Americans’ disapproval of the U.S. Israeli conflict against Iran has increased by 7 percentage points

Americans’ disapproval of the U.S.-Israeli conflict against Iran has increased by 7 percentage points since its beginning, according to a new poll.

In the CNN poll, released Wednesday before President Trump gave an address on the conflict, 66 percent said they either “somewhat disapprove” or “strongly disapprove” of “the U.S. decision to take military action in Iran.”

That’s a rise from a previous poll from late February and early March that asked the same question about the U.S. going ahead with military action against Iran.

Thirty-four percent in the more recent CNN poll said they “strongly approve” or “somewhat approve” of the U.S. talking military action in Iran, down from 41 percent in the late February and early March poll.

When asked if they believe Trump “does or does not have a clear plan for handling the situation in Iran,” 33 percent in the CNN poll thought he has a clear plan, while 67 percent thought he “does not.” In the earlier poll, 40 percent thought Trump had a clear plan, while 60 percent did not.

The conflict against Iran recently entered its second month, and other recent polling also finds disapproval among Americans for the fighting.

In his address Wednesday, Trump seemed to want to reassure the public that the conflict was in the U.S. interests, that it would end soon, and that complications, such as rising energy prices, were a short-term problem.

But he also made statements that suggested the war could intensify amid reports the U.S. is sending additional troops to the region.

On Wednesday, Trump warned of decimating Iranian energy infrastructure if the country’s leaders do not

On Wednesday, Trump warned of decimating Iranian energy infrastructure if the country’s leaders do not accept a peace deal within the next few weeks.

“I can say tonight we are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly, very shortly,” Trump said. “We’re going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks; we’re going to bring them back to the Stone Ages where they belong. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing.”

In response to Trump’s Wednesday evening address, Iran went through with a barrage of attacks on Israel and other Persian Gulf states.

The CNN poll took place March 26-30, featuring 1,201 people and had plus or minus 3.2 percentage points as its margin of sampling error.
