February Security Breach at Mar-a-Lago
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on February 23. At the time, Trump was at the White House.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, an armed man entered through the north gate. He reportedly entered while a vehicle was exiting the property.
Secret Service agents and a sheriff’s deputy confronted the man. Authorities said he carried a gas can and a shotgun.
Bradshaw said officers ordered the man to drop the items. However, he raised the shotgun into a firing position.
Agents and the deputy then fired their weapons and neutralized the threat.
Suspect Identified by Federal Investigators
The Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the suspect as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina. His family had reported him missing earlier that morning.
Investigators believe he purchased the shotgun while traveling south. Authorities later found a box for the weapon in his vehicle.
Officials have not identified a motive. Meanwhile, investigators continue examining the circumstances of the breach.
Previous Security Incidents During 2024 Campaign
The Mar-a-Lago incident followed several previous security threats involving Trump. During the 2024 campaign, he survived two assassination attempts.
In one case, authorities saw a man aiming a rifle near Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach. A Secret Service agent opened fire.
The suspect, Ryan Routh, was later convicted and received a life sentence.
Another attack occurred during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A gunman fired eight shots before a Secret Service counter sniper killed him.
