CNN shares First Lady poll results and it’s bad news for Melania Trump

CNN: Melania Trump net favorable rating at -12

CNN Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten shared the results of a recent poll that shows Melania Trump reached ‘historic lows’ in First Lady favorability among the American people

CNN shared the results of a new poll on Thursday, April 9, and it’s not looking too good for the First Lady.

CNN News Central’s Kate Bolduan and Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten revealed that Melania Trump, who was left humiliated by a screaming kid’s 3-word comment as he pointed at her, has seen her favorability among the American people decline to a historic low, especially compared to other First Ladies at this point in their husbands’ presidencies.

The pollster concluded that Melania’s recent Amazon-backed self-titled documentary, a critical and commercial flop, may have negatively affected her image. It comes after Donald Trump made a disturbing sex comment on stage that silenced the alarmed audience.

The results of the poll conducted by the news network show that the 55-year-old may be the most unpopular First Lady in recent history, with an abysmally low -12 approval rating.

“I would say that the American people really don’t care for Melania Trump,” Enten concluded. “Historic lows for Melania Trump, these numbers are absolutely awful.”

The expert compared her current standing with past numbers, which showed +3 in January 2025 and +30 in May 2018, noting a significant decline in popularity.

Enten went on to explain that the results are “the worst ever” at this point in a president’s second term. Examining past results, the polls ranked the last four second-term First Ladies, with Nancy Reagan polling the highest at +50, followed by Barbara Bush and Michelle Obama at +46 and +42, respectively.

Hillary Clinton was previously the lowest-rated second-term First Lady, polling at +25 at the height of Former President Bill Clinton’s sex scandal.

“Melania Trump breaking records in the way that you don’t want to break records. Historically awful,” the data pro stated. “The American people really don’t care for her.”

When it comes to the reason behind Melania’s low approval rating, Enten cites her recent self-titled documentary, produced by Amazon MGM Studios and directed by disgraced filmmaker Brett Ratner. The film was a critical and commercial flop despite the president touting it as the “hottest” movie in the country and consistently referring to his wife as a “movie star.”

“I think a lot of people saw it as political even if she didn’t want it to be,” the pollster speculated. The film, which hit theaters on January 30, 2026, followed the First Lady in the lead-up to Trump’s second inauguration. Critics flamed the film as vapid and lifeless, with many viewers comparing it to propaganda.

Enten pointed to the film’s box office numbers, comparing its $17 million in ticket sales to its massive and unprecedented $75 million budget, broken down into $40 million for rights and $35 million for marketing.

The CNN correspondents concluded that Melania’s box office bomb correlates with the “historic lack of appeal that she has for a First Lady.”

It comes after Pam Bondi broke her silence after being fired and had a message for Trump.
