Mayor Zohran Mamdani Issues First Veto to Block NYPD Protest Restriction Bill

This is what a mayor with a spine looks like. Zohran Mamdani just issued the first veto of his administration to kill a bill that would have let the NYPD wall off protesters from “educational institutions” defined so broadly that universities, museums, and teaching hospitals could all qualify.

Translation: a striking nurses’ picket, a student divestment encampment, a rally against an ICE contractor, all could have been pushed behind police perimeters with the stroke of a pen.

Nearly a dozen unions saw the trap. The Committee of Interns and Residents, and Teamsters Local 804 demanded a veto, joined by UAW Region 9A, which represents thousands of educators at Columbia and NYU.

The NYCLU lined up against it too. Speaker Julie Menin’s bill squeaked through the Council 30 to 19, just shy of a veto-proof margin. Mamdani read it, listened to labor, and killed it.

This is the difference between leaders who govern by polling memo and leaders who govern by principle. Protest is not a public safety threat. It is the engine of every right that working people have ever won. A mayor who protects that engine is a mayor doing the job.
