Trump Cuba Negotiations Could Begin Soon

President Donald Trump suggested Tuesday that the United States may reopen negotiations with Cuba. He said discussions could move forward under Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump made the comments while responding to questions from reporters. He confirmed that Cuba wants to make a deal with the United States.

However, the president did not outline specific terms of any agreement. He emphasized that Rubio would likely lead the negotiations.

Marco Rubio Expected to Lead Trump Cuba Negotiations

Trump praised Rubio during the exchange with reporters. He said Rubio has performed strongly in his current role.

The president also highlighted Rubio’s background and language skills. According to Trump, Rubio’s ability to speak Spanish could help in negotiations.

Trump Says Cuba Facing Severe Economic Problems

During the discussion, Trump said Cuba is facing major economic and humanitarian problems. He described the country as having little money and limited energy resources.

Trump also said the island nation previously relied heavily on support from Venezuela. However, he claimed that support has now stopped.

According to Trump, the Cuban government once depended on fuel, oil, and money from Venezuela. He said the United States also cut off other resources in past years.

Trump Says Cuba Could Agree to a Deal

Trump suggested that Cuba might eventually accept a deal with the United States. He said negotiations could lead to what he described as a “friendly takeover.”

However, he said the situation could develop in different ways. Trump added that the outcome would not change the overall direction of U.S. policy.

The president also discussed the experiences of Cuban Americans in the United States. He said many Cuban Americans endured hardship under the communist government.

Trump Comments at Shield of the Americas Summit

Trump made similar remarks Saturday during the Shield of the Americas summit. The event took place at his golf club in Doral, Florida.

The summit brought together leaders from across Latin America. Trump discussed regional political developments during the event.

Meanwhile, he referenced recent U.S. military strikes in Venezuela earlier this year. Those strikes reportedly led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Trump Says Cuba “Near the End of the Line”

During the summit, Trump said Cuba is “in its last moments of life.” He claimed the country currently lacks money and oil.

Trump also criticized the country’s political leadership and economic philosophy. He described the government as a “bad regime.”

Additionally, Trump told attendees that Cuba is already negotiating with Rubio. He said a deal between the United States and Cuba could come together quickly.
