Darrell Issa had previously indicated he would run again for his House seat. However, he later reversed that decision and chose to pursue new challenges.
Issa said the choice followed significant reflection. He also expressed confidence that he could have won the race in the newly drawn district.
Despite stepping aside, he endorsed another candidate. Issa announced support for Jim Desmond to represent California’s new 48th congressional district.

The Darrell Issa reelection decision came after changes to California’s congressional map. The move followed actions by Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California.
Newsom pushed for a new congressional map that could eliminate as many as five Republican-held seats. As a result, Issa initially decided to seek reelection in the altered district.
However, he later announced a different path. Issa wrote that he had built strong campaign support and infrastructure.
He also noted that polling suggested he would win the race. Nevertheless, he said it was time for a new chapter after decades in public life and business.
Darrell Issa Reflects on Long Congressional Career
The Darrell Issa reelection decision comes after many years in Congress. He first won election to the United States House of Representatives in 2000.
Issa served nine terms before initially retiring from Congress. Later, he returned to Washington after challenging Duncan D. Hunter in 2020.
Hunter had been indicted on charges involving the misuse of campaign funds. Issa ultimately returned to Congress and served three additional terms.
Before entering politics, Issa spent decades in business. According to his official biography, he holds 37 patents.
Darrell Issa Leadership and Investigations in Congress
During his career, Issa chaired the House Oversight Committee from 2011 to 2015. In that role, he investigated the federal operation known as Operation Fast and Furious.
The investigation focused on an operation during the administration of Barack Obama. The program allowed hundreds of rifles to reach Mexican drug cartels.
In 2012, the House voted to hold Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. The vote followed a dispute over subpoenaed documents connected to the investigation.
Darrell Issa Role in Afghanistan Withdrawal Inquiry
Issa also participated in inquiries related to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The investigations examined the deaths of 13 U.S. service members during the evacuation of Kabul.
The service members were killed during an attack on Aug. 26, 2021. Issa hosted a forum in August 2023 with families of those killed.
During the event, relatives criticized the administration of Joe Biden. They expressed anger over the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Meanwhile, the Darrell Issa reelection decision comes as Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House. The party currently controls the chamber by a 218–214 margin.
